CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Carlos really needed to have a serious talk with one of his friends about the state of his love life. The only problem with that was, all of his friends but one, still lived their lives like they were players and spoke as if they would be all their lives. The only one who had escaped this mentality, was now happily married.

That was his friend, Darren. But the problem with speaking to him was Darren’s wife. She hated Carlos’ guts from the player days, when in her eyes, he used to drag Darren who was her fiancé at the time, to strip joints and clubs at least every other weekend. She didn’t think Carlos could be a one woman type of man, and didn’t want his ways corrupting her husband.

But he had no one else. So despite his reluctance to call his friend, he called his cell phone hoping that his wife didn’t pick it up, as she often did when they were together. After the third ring his worst fear in calling his friend became a reality.

“What do you want, Love,” Darren’s wife Christina said, letting her irritation plainly show at him calling her husband.

“I really need to talk to Darren,” he said with the urgency he felt.

“He’s busy, so tell me what you want, and I’ll pass the message on,” she said. It was clear she was not about to give him the message if she didn’t like it.

“Christina, listen to me please,” he pleaded. “I know you don’t like me because I used to stay dragging Darren out partying, but that’s the old me. I’m a different man now. I don’t live that type of lifestyle anymore. In fact, I’m thinking about getting married myself, and I really need the advice of a friend who is happily married. So can you please tell him to give me a call?”

She was quiet for a while before she answered.

“He’s in the kitchen, I’ll get him.”

“Thank you, Christina,” he replied with gratitude.

“Humph,” was all she mumbled in response.

A few seconds later, he heard a muffled exchange and then the exuberant voice of his friend came across the line.

“What did you do, sweet talk my wife?” he asked with amusement clear in his voice. “You had to for her to give me the phone for a call from the hated Love.”

“I just told her it was an emergency.”

“So what’s the emergency?”

“I think I’m about to get married.”

His friend snickered before he said, “That would be an emergency for the notorious ladies’ man, Mr. Love.”

“I’m happy you find amusement at my expense,” he replied flatly.

“Oh, I find more than amusement,” he said now laughing a full, rich laugh. “I find true humor in this. So some woman has finally got you to hang up your jersey. Do I know her?”

“I doubt you know her personally, but you probably know of her,” he replied. “Her name is Danielle Knight, the daughter of Robert Knight who is the head of the Knight family, who I’ve come to learn is one of Chicago’s most prominent families.
